About Us

We're celebrating 25 Years !

The Kingsmen is the Performance name of the Kingsbridge Barbershop Harmony Chorus (KBHC) ...

The Kingsmen chorus was formed in 1991 by Roy Hann, who is also their Musical Director. The Kingsmen came from humble beginnings in a loft above a Kingsbridge public house, with only eight men attending the first meeting. The membership has grown to nearly 60 today. The Kingsmen have toured the US on two occasions and sung in the Netherlands. The chorus recently attended a National Convention in Harrogate where they came in the top third of all the choruses in the country, quite remarkable coming from a small town like Kingsbridge. This placing reflects the dedication and passion all the members have for their art and the inspiration given by Roy Hann and his team. The Kingsmen have been successful in local competitions and believe that continuous improvement can be achieved by preparing for major performances and international tours.

History of the Kingsmen

The Kingsmen were formed in September 1991 by Roy Hann. To attract singers he put an advert in the local paper with a request that any interested singers should assemble at the local inn. To his delight and surprise 12 men turned up to experience the joys of barbershop harmony singing and within a few months the ensemble grew to a 20 man chorus.

The early rehearsals took place in the loft of the Crabshell Inn in Kingsbridge Devon. They soon outgrew this venue and now rehearse in the excellent facilities offered by the Evangelical Church in Fore Street, Kingsbridge.

Since their inception they have had a steady stream of visitors to their rehearsals from all around the world.

In 1995 they hosted a chorus from New Zealand, 'The Canterbury Plainsman'

In 1997 hosted a party from the 'Masters of Harmony' from the Santé Fe Springs Chapter, California.

In 2007 they hosted the Frisian Harmonisers and their families from Holland.

In 2015 the Kingsmen did a very successful Brothers in Song visit to Frisland in the Netherlands for the second time. They were again hosted by the Frisian Harmonisers on a well organised tour of the region. This tour was extended for a few days when fog intervened on the flight home.

The Kingsmen perform mainly in the South Hams area of Devon in venues such as churches, village halls, hotels, restaurants and pubs. They take part in many Music Festivals in the area including Saltash, Salcombe and Kingsbridge during the summer months

Note
The Kingsmen can often be found singing in The Crabshell Inn after rehearsals on a Wed evening.

Local and national charities have benefited from performances of the Kingsmen and to date they have raised in excess of £101,000 for charities which include Victim Support, Cancer Relief and Hospices, Save the Children and BBC Devon Chestnut Appeal.
