Nick Hanbury a baritone with the Kingsmen used to work for the Ordnance Survey for 31 years until he retired in 2001. He took Heather Hanrott, Sally Webber, John Meehan and Chris Birch on a three hour navigation exercise around Butterdon Hill (on Dartmoor) near Ivybridge as part of a package they bid for at a recent Kingsmen 'Auction of Promises' evening. There is a stone circle at the summit (which is 336mtr above sea level).

They set off at 9.00am in drizzle and low cloud - really not ideal conditions for practicing newly acquired skills! With visibility down to only 40 - 50yds - the group used dead reckoning techniques to move safely between a number of planned way points in a circular route and back to their start point. The morning outing finished with Heather and John providing an excellent lunch for everyone back at their nearby home at Moorhaven Village, where the mornings adventure could be mulled over with a glass of wine. Kingsmen Steve Webber joined the party for lunch.

The map reading hike completed the second leg of Nick's two part auction pledge on the work of the Ordnance Survey.
